THERESA CROWLEY SPITLER is a Bellefonte native whose family owned The Gamble Mill for 25 years. Now residing in Montoursville, she received a B.S. in Education from Lock Haven University and has taken classes at the Bald Eagle Art League painting workshops. She has been in the League since 1995 and is also a member of the Tioga Council on the Arts and the Berks Art Council. She has won awards at various regional exhibitions, including the Bald Eagle, Gmeiner (Wellsboro), Lewisburg, and the Pennsylvania Apple and Cheese Festival.
She works in a variety of media and subject matter to explore light and shadow, form and color. For her, painting is about solving a problem and creating something beautiful or thought provoking in the process. She has recently begun working with pastels, which are well represented in this show. She says, "The pure color and intensity of pastels is very exciting. Pastels can be handled boldly or with a gentle touch. They give me immediate gratification. The colors are always ready with no need for mixing. I work mostly on a sanded pastel paper that holds a lot of pigment. I can apply many layers, which often give the deep rich appearance of an oil painting."
LISA DARROW of Williamsport received a B.A. in Art from Mansfield University and studied art therapy at Marywood College. Her juried exhibitions include the Bald Eagle Art League, the Lewisburg Festival, and the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center, where she won the Artist's Magazine Award. She was also accepted to the Arnot Art Museum's juried "Arts in the Park" in Elmira in 1999.
Lisa's artistic influences are Georgia O'Keefe and Vasily Kandinsky. She is known for her florals and nature-related subjects done in watercolors. In her work she attempts to present a vision of their beauty.
