CAROL HICKS of Osceola Mills is a native of central Pennsylvania. She is a Registered Nurse and graduated from Temple University. She has always had an interest in drawing and painting. After living in several states, she returned to Pennsylvania in 1972. At that time she began to pursue her interest in art, but soon realized that her interest in painting was much greater than that of a hobbyist. So she began an intensive program of study in a range of media and subject matter. She has studied in several groups, but principally in workshops with Chuck Hall of Coburn. As she began to paint, her studio work developed to a professional level, and she began to do portraits on commission.
Ms. Hicks has exhibited in numerous area shows since 1974 and has won several awards. She has most recently been accepted to a gallery in Cashiers, North Carolina. She has works in collections in seven states and throughout Pennsylvania. She is currently involved in a series of landscape paintings; she is also interested in the Civil War as a painting subject.
Of this show she writes, "My paintings represent subjects that I find challenging. I especially like to interpret rock formations and seaside scenery. The use of pastels presents challenges as well, and I continue to master my techniques in this medium. Application of many layers is required to achieve depth of color. I find the transformation of reality to a painted image that will evoke an emotional response in the viewer very satisfying."
PAT McDANNEL of Treasure Lake (Dubois) was trained as an art educator at Edinboro University. Over the years she has participated in many painting workshops, locally with Chuck Hall of Coburn.
Pat spent some time as an art teacher in the schools of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and of Penns Valley. Later she created the preschool program Paint & Play, which she directed and taught for a number of years. She has also taught adult painting classes.
She has won numerous awards for watercolor and pastel, and her work hangs in many private collections throughout Pennsylvania. Her latest shows were in the Gawcheau Angel Studio in July 1999 and in the Art in Common show at the Southern Alleghenies Museum. She regularly exhibits at the Clearfield SRAC shows as well as the Blair County Art Show.
The paintings in this exhibit are all the result of her experience. The landscapes are from places she has traveled, although she painted in the studio using personal photos as references. She has been painting most recently in pastel, and she finds that medium gives the qualities she needs to achieve desired lush colors. She has also included several floral paintings. Gardening is one of her hobbies; most of the flowers were taken from her garden.
