Minutes, January 21, 2000

Mark Van Horn, Acting Secretary

Present: Gay and Jim Dunne, Colina Jordan, Romayne Naylor (President), Colleen Pike-Blair, Paul Plassmann Irene Biggans, Bob Fenichel, Helen Bechdel, Mark Van Horn.

Locale: The Dunne residence

Meeting called to order by Romayne at 8:00 PM

Minutes: Mark distributed the minutes from the December 3 meeting. He was then promptly flamed for the many misspellingsand inaccurate recordings of one each of Jim's and Colina's statements. Mark made notes of these items on a copy of the minutes. Bob made and Helen seconded a motion to accept the minutes as corrected. The motion passed.

Treasurer's Report (end of webpage): We viewed Dave's report in his absence. Bob moved tthat the $1,137 raised at Helen's sale should remain in the Film Forum budget. Jim seconded the motion and the motion was approved. Mark seconded Jim's motion to accept the financial report as written and the motion passed.

Arts Administrator: Romayne read a letter from Sam (attached) and circulated the mail in his absence. The main point was that the Garver Fund application was submitted on January 3.

BHCA Gallery at the Gamble Mill: Colina said that the current show is "splendid" and expressed her disappointment with the low attendance at the opening. It was also mentioned that it might be a good idea to rework the mailing list for this event.

Old House Fair: Romayne said that she will not chair this committee again, but is willing to help.

Summer Sounds: Colina reported that the gazebo has been reserved starting Father's Day for 10 dates. She added that she will have a meeting soon and that they may get a country band from the Howard area. She also said that they will probably invite the Nittany Highland Pipe band every other year instead of a return this season.

Film Forum: Bob expressed his appreciation of Sam's help with this project. There is an article and advertisement in the Weekender. The mailing has been done and a press release will be sent for broadcast. Bob also mentioned that because the film "Gummo" is "freaky and undeveloped," it is inappropriate and will be replaced. He closed with a distribution of flyers and an appeal for help during the film dates.

Library Concerts: Jim reported that the next concert features Simple Gifts on February 20, followed by some other "nice concerts" in March.

Victorian Christmas: Mark reported that he and True attended the last Victorian Christmas, Inc. meeting and there was a consensus that the entire weekend of the event seemed on the slow side. The Arts and Crafts show did well renenue-wise, and he read a Thank You card from one of the vendors. However, there was also a negative letter sent from another vendor which was also read. Mark distributed copies of the letter and asked everyone to read it for discussion at the next BHCA meeting. Helen said that she heard there's a nice show in Mifflinburg and that someone should look into it for some ideas. Colina mentioned that the shops in town could have better window decorations and that perhaps a prize award would be an incentive.

Local Government Grant: Ibis was covered in the Arts Administrator's report; see attached.

Building Lighting: This has been dropped from the agenda.

Old Business:
-Romayne said that the Fulbright Tour happened. She and several other notables spoke to the group about local government functions and happenings in the community.
-Colina would like to see some younger people getting involved in BHCA and said that we should have some kind of thing to attract them.

-Colina and Jim said it would be nice if the minutes and agenda were available two weeks prior to the following meeting. Mark said that it would be difficult, implying that it would not happen in his lifetime.

New Business:
-Helen asked if we have anything invested in the carousel. Romayne said, "No."
-Next meeting is February 18, possibly at the Fisher residence.

Adjournment: Jim made a motion to adjourn and Bob seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 PM.

ART ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT FOR JANUARY 21, 2000 MEETING

1. The Garver Charity Fund

The Garver Grant Application for the '99 Summer Sounds series was submitted on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 for the Elks Board of Directors meeting. I spoke with 3 individuals and nobody could tell me when in Jan. the meeting was going to be held. According to the application guidelines, a decision on the application would be made at the next board meeting (March?).

A grant application for the 2000 Summer Sounds series should be submitted for the Elk's March Board Meeting. Colina &/or Melady, please contact me. I will need details for the application.

2. Fundraising Drive

To date, we have collected $2,975 from the fundraising drive that was started in Nov. 99.

I cross-checked the fundraising data base that I started with the existing BHCA mailing list and added those names that did not appear.

3.  Local Gov't Grant Committee

Final Narrative and Financial Reports for 1999 are due Jan 31, 2000

We received (1/20/00) the Award Agreement from LGG for the year 2000. We requested  $6,000 but were granted $5,000. The agreement needs to be signed and returned by Feb. 4, 2000.

4.  Gallery at The Gamble Mill

Mail cards were sent out on Jan. 5.  Question: Did anyone receive theirs?  Press releases were sent out

5. Film Forum

Mail cards were mailed out Thursday, 1/20/00

An ad will run in the Feb issue of Voices and the Jan 21 issue of Weekender.

Thank you Jim for the help with the ad and flyers. Question for Jim: Can you make two more ads? One with Harlan County USA removed from the list, and the other with just the info for the final showing. We would like to save money by reducing the size of the ad as the series progresses. As you recall the first ad was 2 columns by 5.5 inches. I would like to run the next ad in the Feb 5 issue of Weekender, so I will need to submit the ad by Monday, Jan. 31.,. Thanks again. My tenth born will be named J.D.

Flyers for the good of the peoples - please take a flyer(s) and distribute them at your local bookstore, coffee house, pub, etc. Helen will circulate a list so that locations aren't duplicated. Please return the remaining flyers to Helen and I will pick them up from her.

Press Release - I FAXed a press release to CNET. Bob was going to take care of the rest.

6. Mail - nothing to report. Please circulate.
