Meeting of October 21, 2005

American Philatelic Center

100 Match Factory Place, Bellefonte PA

Present:  Romayne Naylor, president; Dave Eggler, Treasurer; Colina Jordan-Seeley; Ralph Seeley; Jim Dunne; Gay Dunne; Kim Flick; Zane Gabler; Holly Fritchman; Bob Fenichel; Donna Rochon; Kitty Wunderly, Arts Administrator.

1.   The meeting was called to order by Romayne at 7:10 p.m.

2.   The minutes of the meeting of September 16, 2005, were reviewed. Donna moved to accept the minutes as presented; seconded by Dave; unanimously approved.

3.  Treasurer’s report (end of webpage): Dave presented his report and noted that a designated Performing Arts Fund has been set up, as approved at the September 16 meeting.  The Historical Walking Tour maps were funded as usual by selling ads in the publication.

Jim moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report; seconded by Kitty; unanimously approved.

4.  Arts Administrator’s report: Kitty said that Rick Hirsch’s new composition, Village Green, in Blue: A Musical Tribute to Talleyrand Park, will be performed for the first time at the Garman Opera House on November 12 at 8 p.m., tickets are available at Cool Beans and the Garman in Bellefonte, and Webster’s in State College.

Kitty showed images of this year’s two Christmas stamps – cookie cutters, and a Madonna and Child – and asked for suggestions on which to use, in what proportion, for the 500 cacheted covers to be sold for BHCA’s fundraising effort at Victorian Christmas.  No one liked the cookie cutters, opinion was mixed on whether to use Madonna and Child stamps on all 500 covers, or what; Jim finally said that Kitty should decide about which stamps to use.

Kitty reported that she received a phone call from a person on the committee assembling preliminary information for an application for the Main Street Program.  She was asking about BHCA and our projects.  Kitty gave the details but also mentioned that we feel these are our programs and have been for a long time, and we would be unwilling to surrender them to a Main Street Program. The person said that this would not happen.

5.    Committee reports:

a. Gallery at the Gamble Mill: Jim said that the committee would be meeting the following Tuesday to consider the 2006 participating artists.  Donna, on behalf of Susan Nicholas Gephart, presented information about the Centre County Farmland Trust’s “Farm and Art Project.” Kim Flick is site coordinator, and the Art Alliance also is involved.  Ten artists are creating art relating to four farm sites, with the first of four exhibitions taking place in spring 2006.  A percentage of the sales will be shared with sponsoring organizations. Susan wondered if BHCA would handle an exhibition in July.

b. Summer Sounds:  Kitty said that the committee will be meeting in March 2006 to decide next summer’s program.

c. Film Forum: No report.

d. Sunday Afternoons at the Library:  The first concert of the season went well.

e. Victorian Christmas Arts & Crafts Show: The committee will meet at True’s on November 1 to choose this year’s crafters and do the acceptance mailing.

f. Talleyrand Park Committee:  The new iron picnic tables were “dedicated” in a little ceremony on October 10, with committee members, donor Mrs. Decker and her daughter, and Bob Potter of the Centre County Community Foundation in attendance.  The new walking tour map by the committee is being distributed around town.

g. BHCA 30th Anniversary Committee:  No report.

6.   Old Business

BHCA website: Bob Fenichel said that he still has the domain name bellefonte arts.org, paying $9 annually for this registration.  Dave offered to try to update the site.  Bob said he has connections with the Art Alliance, which in turn has a link with an entity that supplies non-profits with cheap software, among other benefits.  For example, Dreamweaver, which retails at $400, is available for $30.

7.   New Business

New retail store/meeting space:  Donna announced that she will be opening a shop called Etcetera., etc., on November 11, at the former Soaphie’s site at 107 S. Allegheny St.  It will feature fabric art, paintings, and other arts and crafts.   There are 700 sq. feet of space in the back, which will be Donna’s workroom, and which she is making available to BHCA for meeting space. Donna was thanked for this generous offer.

Centre County Community Foundation:  CCCF President Bob Potter came to the Talleyrand Park table event and Romayne spoke with him about BHCA.  We have received CCCF funding at various times but Potter was newly interested in us since he has been receiving mailings in the past year.  He asked if we could meet with him sometime.  The CCCF operates using the interest from invested gifts, trusts, etc., and has a lot of money to distribute. He cannot come to the November meeting but we will continue to try to find a mutually agreeable time to meet with him.

8.   Next meeting: November 18, 7 p.m., at Etcetera, etc.

9.   Adjournment:  Dave moved to adjourn at 8:08 p.m.; seconded by Gay; unanimously approved.
