Minutes
Meeting of April 1, 2005, 7:30 p.m.
Bellefonte Borough Building
236 W. Lamb Street
Meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m. by Romayne Naylor, President.
Present: Romayne Naylor, True Fisher, Rob Fisher, Sharon McCarthy, Mark Van Horn, Jack Lafond, Dave Eggler (Treasurer), Kitty Wunderly (Arts Administrator)
1. Introductions/ Review of Minutes, meeting of January 28, 2005. Sharon moved to accept the minutes as written; seconded by True; unanimously approved.
2. Treasurer’s report (end of webpage)
Copies of the financial report as of 3/31/05 were distributed. True moved to accept the treasurer’s report; seconded by Sharon; unanimously approved.
3. Arts Administrator’s report.
Kitty plans to do a follow-up mailing to the addresses that were corrected by the post office in last fall’s mailing, and the next annual corporate fund-raising letter. Kitty mentioned that there are several boxes of files dating to the beginning years of BHCA that seem to have never been touched again, and probably could be weeded. Romayne and possibly True or Dave might be able to help to judge what is necessary to keep and what can be tossed from these early files. Kitty will reapply to the Garver Fund for Summer Sounds.
4. Committee Reports:
Gallery at the Gamble Mill: Sharon reported that Michelle Montes and Holly Fritchman have joined the committee since the last meeting. The next exhibition will be “Art from the Bellefonte Schools,” and special food and drink will be provided for the kids at the opening reception.
Old House Fair: no report
Summer Sounds: 9 concerts are scheduled for this summer, beginning June 19 and ending August 14
Gannon Memorial Jazz Festival: no report.
Film Forum: no report.
Sunday Afternoon at the Library: The Pennsylvania Quintet will perform April 3.
Victorian Christmas Arts & Crafts Show: True reported that the Bush House is willing to host the show again this year; the YMCA and the match factory also will be used. Discussion was held about possibly using a train shuttle and a sleigh or coach to get between the venues, weather permitting. Jack suggested adding an international flavor for the event by having a Christmas ethnic food festival. True noted that the Bush House will not allow competing food vendors at that site, since the hotel has two restaurants.
Local Government Grants: The committee met at the end of March and made decisions for this year’s funding. There were 15 applicants, 9 were funded.
5. Old Business:
The first local history flyer, “Bellefonte and the Origins of Penn State,” is ready to distribute to various places, such as the Train Station, Centre County Historical Museum, the library, etc.
6. New Business/Announcements:
a. Bellefonte Visioning Project: Romayne reported on her meeting with several members of the Visioning steering committee, to discuss the proposal to merge all the existing local non-profit organizations into a single new corporation. All the existing group presidents would be vice-presidents in the new entity. Romayne could not get answers regarding the financial aspects of this “merger.”
A spirited discussion ensued, during which it was asked why all the groups had to surrender their independence, why not just all become members of this new corporation? Eventually it became clear that too many unanswered questions surround this proposal. Romayne will try to pursue the matter with those who have answers and report back to the BHCA.
b. Kitty passed around some examples of cacheted covers – philatelic souvenir envelopes with special designs and postal cancellations – and proposed that BHCA could produce one for Victorian Christmas 2005, as the first in a series of collectible covers for the event, as a fund-raiser. The examples were “silk cachets,” and everyone liked them. She has spoken to the maker, Colorano Silk Cachets of Huntington, New York, and the minimum order would be 500 covers at $1.05 each. In addition, 37 cents in postage would have to be added to each cover. There is a lengthy procedure to get postal approval for a special pictorial cancellation, which would have to be designed by BHCA in addition to finding a design for the cachet. Some discussion was held about suitable art for the cachet: a Billy Mills painting, a photograph, an original drawing, etc. The cover idea was well-received but no vote was taken.
Next meeting: May 13, 2005, 7:30 p.m., at Gay & Jim Dunne’s home, pending confirmation by the hosts.
Adjournment: Mark moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:25 p.m., seconded by Romayne, unanimously agreed.
Respectfully submitted,
Kitty Wunderly, Arts Administrator
