BHCA MINUTES----FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2006

The October meeting of the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association was held at the home of Jim and Gay Dunne.

In attendance were:   Jim and Gay Dunne, Romayne Naylor, True Fisher, Colina and Ralph Seeley, Erin McCall (mccall.erin@gmail.com), Sara Jarvis (sara.jarvis@adelphia.net),  Mark Van Horn.

Condolences were given to True on the sudden death of Rob.  BHCA will miss him.

The minutes from the last meeting were approved.

TREASURER’S REPORT (at end of Minutes):

Dave Eggler, Treasurer, was not present, but had prepared a report that was handed out.  True reported on the money that is in the Talleyrand Park Committee’s account and related that $ 20,000 came from a grant from the Commissioners and the Tourist and Convention Bureau;  $4,500 came from the Centre County Community Foundation for new picnic tables, and $3,600 came from Mrs. Elmer Decker for picnic tables.

The question was raised as to whether or not some of the money should be put into an interest bearing savings account.   Dave Eggler will be asked to address this question.

Notice:  Dave asked that we all send him an e-mail so he can confirm that he has the correct e-mails for us.  Please reply to him NOW.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Romayne announced that Mark Houser was selected to be the new Arts Administrator for BHCA.  He has a master’s degree in Fine arts, comes with excellent qualifications, his family is from Bellefonte, and he is an artist himself, a photographer.  Most attendees knew of his work.  He will be attending the next meeting.

Sara and Erin were asked how they found out about BHCA, and they responded with “the web site” and “the Gamble Mill Gallery”, respectively.

THE GAMBLE MILL GALLERY

Everyone was happy with the show which was in cooperation with the Farmland Trust and there were a large number of people at the opening.

Colina mentioned that now that the artists have nametags, shouldn’t the BHCA committee members also have nametags to acknowledge and identify them and the organization.   It was thought to be a good suggestion and Jim took note.

There will be a committee meeting in November to select participants in an open show for the next show at the Mill.

Erin volunteered to be on the selections committee for the Gamble Mill.

Her e-mail is mccall.erin@gmail.com.

SUMMER SOUNDS

The concerts may have made money this year.  Romayne or Mark Houser will get in touch with Joanne Knupp to see if she will chair the committee again.

SUNDAY AFTERNOONS IN THE LIBRARY

Jim was noted that these chamber music concerts (not just classical music) were started in 1981.  Diane Gold continues to put excellent programs together for our winter music series.  Everyone extended their thanks to her for her effort.

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW

True, who is no longer chairperson but is helping out this year, reported that Jim Dunne printed out the labels and True sent out the call for artists and applications.

We need to check on the status of the Philatelic Society’s Hall to make sure it is reserved for our use.  Also, we will double check with the YMCA, although True has the reservation sheet in her folder.

On Friday, November 3, at 7:00, p.m. the selections committee will meet at True’s house to select artists from the applications.  Mark Van Horn agreed to be on the committee with Romayne and True.  Mark Houser will be called by RomayneTrue will call several other former members of the committee.

Colina brought up the fact that we should do one of the historic walking tours again, and she would volunteer if no one else does one.  True will get in touch with the Victorian Christmas Committee about this.

THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY PARTY FOR BHCA

It seems impossible to schedule this event this year, but it was decided we must do something.  So, since February is a quieter time of year, it was decided to do something around Valentine’s Day—either the 9th or the 16th.   We can see about holding it at the Philatelic Society. Jim Dunne will put together a slide show of our history, we will have an exhibit of things we have done or publicity we have received, and also have an art exhibit of some sort.

Everyone will be asked to bring a dish (a big one) and BHCA will provide the drinks.  If we can find free live music, we will have some.

Romayne will ask Kitty to check into using the Philatelic Society Hall--price, dates, etc.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Election of officers will take place at the January meeting.  Colina felt we should be making an effort to move new people up into the executive committee in order to keep the organization growing and keep officers from burning out.  She agreed to be Chair of the Nominating Committee.  She will contact others to serve with her.

FILM FORUM

Sara and Erin expressed an interest in working on this project, but would need some background information and help from former committee members.  Helen Bechdel will be called and Gay Dunne offered some comments and description of what had been done before.

MEETINGS

It was decided we need to schedule meetings regularly and list them on the web site.  The third Friday of the month was selected.  A suggestion was made that we could have multiple domains that direct people to the web site for the location of the meeting.

It was agreed that having meetings in homes is the most congenial, but one or two meetings a year should be held in a public forum for those who might not want to attend their first meeting in a home.

The November meeting will be held on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17 at 7:30 p.m. at True Fisher’s house, 228 N. Allegheny Street, Bellefonte.  Tel. 355-1458.   Bring a dish to share and a new neighbor.

Respectfully submitted,

True Fisher

P.S.  I have put names and topics in bold type in so you will see what was done and what needs to be done and by whom.  Maybe it helps??

Talleyrand Park Committee received $20,000 from the CCVB for Gazebo repairs, $4,500 from the CCCF for metal tables, and $1,630 in Rob Fisher Memorials.  Don’t be misled by our total assets – most of the TP money will be spent in fairly short order.
