Minutes of November 13, 2009 meeting were approved
Treasurer's Report (Dave Eggler; report below): Presented & approved. BHCA distribution from Victorian Christmas Arts & Crafts show: $1950. Funds from the fundraising letter: $2605. Colina suggested the fund raising committee meet no later than October 15 for the purpose of getting the fund raising letter out much earlier than the previous several years. Colina’s motion was approved by voice vote. Mary will remind us next September.
Fund Raising Activities: (Joann) Joann negotiated a $3500 (versus $4000) fee for the Artie Shaw Orchestra for May 1, 8-10 PM. We have agreed to provide free B&B/housing for 17 - 18 people. Because the High School will not allow street shoes on the gym floor, we will use the high school auditorium at $250 plus the janitorial fee. There is a carpeted space in front of the stage which may allow dancing, and a pre concert performance by the elementary and/or middle school jazz bands @ 7:30 PM. The high school jazz band is not available on May 1. Joann purchased a general liability insurance policy ($500,000 coverage @ $207 per year – it covers all BHCA activities) and obtained a certificate of insurance. Catherine Dupuis will promote the concert to central Pennsylvania jazz musicians. Mary Ellen Hill has volunteered to arrange concert publicity. Jim is responsible for obtaining and distributing tickets. The committee (Joann, Gay, Sally, Maryellen Hill, Jim) will prepare an estimated income and expenses and set ticket prices for adults & children.
Summer Sounds: Joann expressed interest in targeting a younger audience than recent concerts provided. She suggested a new series in Talleyrand Park on Saturday evening. An alternate suggestion was to have targeted concerts incorporated into the current Sunday evening concert series. Joann will bring it up for discussion at the next meeting of the Summer Sounds committee on February 11.
Gallery at the Gamble Mill: Current show: "Oeuvres sur Papier", a group show of works on paper, Jan 16 - April 16. Reception: Tuesday, February 9, 7-9 PM
Sunday Afternoons at the Library: Next concert: March 21 - Easterly Chamber Players.
Local Government Grant: Jim reported that the LGG for 2010-11 had been canceled by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts because of lack of funds due to the State economic crisis. Bellefonte Borough also canceled its matching grant. The net loss to the arts in Bellefonte is $12930. In addition to funding many artist and groups over its 28 year existence, it funded two of BHCA’S longest running programs, the Gallery at the Gamble Mill and Sunday Afternoons at the Library. We will need to find alternate funding if these programs are to continue. The annual budget for the Gallery is $1650, and $5000 for 5 concerts in the Library. In 2009-10 there are only 4 concerts with a budget of $4000. Marge Duda suggested an art & antique auction as a fund raiser to support these orphaned series.
Next Meeting: Friday, February 26, 7 PM at the residence of Sally Houser, 716 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte.
Respectfully submitted,
James Dunne, secretary
