Explore Bellefonte’s History, One Stop at a Time
Bellefonte’s historic streets offer a remarkable look at more than two centuries of architecture, community, and change. BHCA’s Historic Walking Tour helps residents and visitors discover the buildings, landmarks, and stories that have shaped the town.
The first edition of the Historical Walking Tour of Bellefonte was created by the Bellefonte Rotary Club’s Bicentennial Committee in 1976. Since then, BHCA’s Talleyrand Park Citizens Committee has produced various editions of the walking tour map and accompanying historical notes. BHCA also periodically conducts guided walking tours through central Bellefonte.
Tour stops are identified on an 1874 map originally published in The Atlas of Centre County Pennsylvania by Beach Nichols, A. Pomeroy & Co., Philadelphia.
Take the Virtual Walking Tour
BHCA’s Virtual Walking Tour brings the experience online, making it possible to explore Bellefonte’s history from wherever you are. Based largely on the original Walking Tour Map and its accompanying text, the virtual tour combines information about significant sites with historic images from the Fred Smith Collection.
Bellefonte is particularly fortunate to have many buildings more than a century old that retain much of their historic character. Preservation efforts received an important boost in 1970, when the Borough of Bellefonte established a local historic district. Proposed changes to existing structures and new construction within the district are reviewed by the Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB), helping preserve the architectural character that makes Bellefonte distinctive.
Whether exploring online or walking the streets in person, the tour offers an opportunity to look more closely at Bellefonte and discover the history behind the places that define the community.
